Media statement - Thursday 30 June 2011
Attributable to MLA Managing Director, David Palmer:
Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) today welcomed the Prime Minister's comments about the importance of resuming the cattle trade with Indonesia and her confidence that the trade has a strong future.
MLA also acknowledged the Australian Government's short-term assistance package for producers and businesses in the live cattle industry.
MLA considers that the most effective way of overcoming the hardship being experienced in northern Australia is for the trade to resume to those Indonesian facilities that meet, or exceed, global animal welfare standards. There are supply chains in place that can provide this assurance.
MLA and LiveCorp have a team of people on the ground in Indonesia implementing animal welfare improvements to further facilities.
