Evaluation

"Performance evaluation is critical for Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) in delivering world-class services and solutions in partnership with the red meat industry and government.

We have an obligation to report to all our stakeholders on their investment with MLA. To do that in a meaningful way, we must measure the effectiveness of what we do, reporting where we have had success and also where we fell short."

- MLA's chairman, Don Heatley

MLA's independent evaluation framework, developed by the Centre for International Economics, enables an objective assessment of program outcomes against our strategic imperatives – to build demand, increase market access, develop competitive advantage and build industry capability. The framework also reports on alignment of our programs with the Australian Government’s Rural Research and Development Priorities.

Why does MLA need a framework for independent evaluation?

An independent program evaluation framework plays a vital role in strengthening the capability of the industry to generate strategic plans and also provides a context for reporting on MLA’s performance.

A work schedule of planned, rigorous, and transparent program evaluation increases industry confidence in MLA’s capacity to deliver outcomes and appropriately invest industry and government funds.

An effective evaluation framework provides findings that can be used for program decision-making, program improvement, and optimal resource allocation. Moreover, it will empower MLA staff to further sharpen the focus on achieving real outcomes that align with the objectives of the MLA strategic plan 2008-2012 (PDF, 3.5MB).

Implementation of the evaluation work schedule promotes a collaborative culture of robust program review and improvement within MLA. It will allow successes to be rewarded and replicated, and facilitate the sharing of lessons learned which will enable changes to be made to ensure that MLA is continually improving the delivery of its programs and services.

The MLA Strategic Plan 2008 - 2012 works in concert with this evaluation work schedule to deliver a culture of collaborative enquiry and participative reflection within MLA and with our investment partners.
