Standards & guidelines
Producers must understand their roles and responsibilities when transporting livestock.
Producers need to comply with the model codes of practice for the transport of livestock and relevant state and territory legislation.
Animal welfare
As part of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy new Australian Standards and Guidelines for the Welfare of Animals are currently being prepared.
The Australian Animal Welfare Strategy was developed by the Australian government over a five-year period and endorsed by the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in May 2004.
Within Australia, state and territory governments are responsible for animal welfare legislation. The Australian Animal Welfare Strategy has recognised the need to ensure consistency in animal welfare legislation around Australia.
Over the past few years, the livestock industries, government and researchers have collaborated to prepare new Australian Standards and Guidelines for the Welfare of Animals - Land Transport of Livestock. These new standards and guidelines were endorsed by the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in May 2009 and are expected to be legislated throughout Australia during 2010/2011.
The new standards and guidelines will replace the model codes of practice for the land transport of various animal species and the provisions on livestock transport in the model codes of practice for the welfare of animals, including cattle, sheep and goats.
New Australian Standards and Guidelines for the Welfare of Cattle and Sheep are also being developed.
