Drought & disaster management
Variable rainfall, extreme feed costs, low cash reserves and an the Australian economy have impacted producer returns. As a result of these challenges, many livestock producers are facing complex and emotional decisions regarding their businesses.
There is a wealth of experience, industry support and resources available to producers to ensure they have the right strategy in place - the most important and often most difficult decision is choosing to access these resources.

Fire
The North Australian Fire Information (NAFI) website provides information for cattle producers and land managers relating to fires in northern Australia.
The fire information includes hotspots (locations of burning fires), fire scars (recently burnt country), fire weather, fire history and lightning strikes, which can be viewed against various backgrounds such as topographic maps and satellite images.
MLA has recently supported improvements to the mapping process to increase its reliability for areas of Queensland as most validation and testing of the fire mapping has been done in the Northern Territory, Kimberley and areas of Cape York Peninsular. More information can be found in Final Report B.NBP.0538.
Many producers, especially those on large properties, use the NAFI website to improve fire monitoring, to protect infrastructure and fodder from wildfire, and to improve their fire management plans.
