Although Dubbo cattle sale last week was not held, rain in the supply areas caused numbers to slip on fortnight ago levels. Yearlings and grown steers were well supplied while around 500 cows were offered. Competition was strong with yearlings up to 6¢ dearer, grown steers gaining 5¢ and cows lifting up to 8¢/kg. Medium yearling steers returning to the paddock sold around 224¢ as heavy weights to feed averaged 204¢/kg. Medium weight grown steers to feed averaged 174c as heavy steers and bullocks ranged from 180¢ to 191.2¢/kg. Light lean cows averaged 134¢ as the heavy weights were mostly from 155¢ to 160¢/kg.
Numbers doubled on fortnight ago levels at Bairnsdale. Quality was improved as a greater number of buyers were present. Most of the yarding though was 3¢ to 7¢/kg cheaper. Heavy yearling steers to the trade mostly sold in the mid 180¢ range after reaching 194¢/kg. Heavy grown steers ranged from 182¢ to 184¢ as the better bullocks averaged 175¢/kg. Heavy cows made to 150¢ as most were from 135¢ to 140¢/kg.
At the completion of Thursday’s markets the EYCI was 394.5¢/kg cwt. The Eastern States Trade Steer indicator was on 205.4¢ while heavy steers were on 182.6¢ and medium cows were at 144¢/kg.
Numbers increased significantly at Wagga after the Australia day holiday last Thursday. Quality was mixed across all categories. Light 2 score lambs suitable for restocking ranged from $72 to $102 to average $92/head. Trade weight lambs sold from $97 to $126/head to average 506¢/kg cwt. Heavy 3 score lambs averaged 489¢kg cwt. Mutton numbers increased with all categories represented. Medium weight Merino ewes averaged 320¢/kg cwt.
At the conclusion of Thursday’s market the eastern states restocker lamb indicator was 510¢/kg cwt. Merino lambs and light lambs averaged 447¢ and 481¢/kg cwt respectively. Trade lambs settled at 491¢ with heavy lambs at 476¢/kg cwt. The mutton indicator settled on 304¢/kg cwt.
