Eastern states sheep slaughter as reported by MLA’s National Livestock Reporting Service for January increased 16% compared with the same period in 2011. The higher trend was also reflected in sheep yardings at eastern states markets, increasing 14% year-on-year.
Compared with the same period in 2011, NSW sheep slaughter increased 24%, while Victorian and SA throughput increased 4% and 10%, respectively. While much smaller in number, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Tasmania and Queensland, with both states more than doubling on last year.
Yardings across the eastern states for January were greater in NSW, Victoria and SA, while offerings contracted in Tasmania.
