Lamb and mutton exports to South Asia rise in January

08 February 2012

Australian lamb exports to South East Asia and Greater China jumped 5% year-on-year in January, to 2,378 tonnes swt (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries), with strong demand from China (1,571 tonnes swt) driving the increase. Shipments of breast and flap to China increased 6% year-on-year, to 1,040 tonnes swt.

While higher overall exports to the region were underpinned by strong volumes delivered to China, most other countries saw a fall on January 2011. Exports to Hong Kong (282 tonnes swt) and Singapore (120 tonnes swt) fell 14% and 40% year-on-year, respectively, although exports to Malaysia (140 tonnes swt) did improve 2% year-on-year in January.

While Australian mutton supplies continue to remain historically tight, shipments to the region in January surged 65% year-on-year, to 2,122 tonnes swt. Driving the increase was a rise in exports to China (694 tonnes swt), Malaysia (527 tonnes swt) and Taiwan (418 tonnes swt), with shipments increasing 21%, 169% and 167% year-on-year, respectively.
