Lamb prices mixed on larger numbers
03 February 2012
Lambs offered across national markets reported by MLA’s National Livestock Reporting Service increased this week, largely due to the impact of the Australian Day public holiday last week.
With the larger numbers, light lamb prices slipped 1¢, finishing Thursday at 484¢/kg cwt. Despite an increasing interest from feeder buyers as the week progressed, lambs suitable for restocking registered a decline of 12¢ on last week, to settle at 513¢/kg cwt. Merino lambs sold to fluctuating demand, but still recorded a gain of 3¢ on last week, averaging 441¢/kg cwt.
All the customary processors were reportedly present at this week’s markets, with most making purchases, as the quality of the trade and heavy weight lambs offered was generally above average.
Trade lambs, offered in large numbers, eased 12¢ on last week, to average 497¢/kg cwt, with the heavy lamb indicator down 4¢ on last week, at 481¢/kg cwt.
