Slaughter lambs dearer
Lamb yardings across MLA’s NLRS reported eastern states markets increased by 10% on last week, mostly in heavier categories, with buyers still tentative with their bids. Restocker activity remained limited, with competition weaker on a larger sized offering. Light store lambs sold slightly cheaper at $61/head. A reduced supply of Merino lambs could not compensate for the weaker interest from buyers as they sold slightly cheaper at $74/head.
Processors and supermarket buyers actively competed against each other in order to secure adequate supplies. Light lambs lifted 8¢ to average389¢/kg cwt, while trade lambs gained 6¢, averaging 405¢/kg cwt. Exporters competed strongly with domestic processors on a larger penning of heavy lambs which sold 5¢ dearer at 376¢/kg cwt
Sheep yardings fell by 7% across the eastern states, with the mutton indicator 3¢ dearer at 281¢/kg cwt.
