UK net exporter of sheepmeat in 2011
Provisional figures from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) report that the United Kingdom (UK) was a net exporter of sheepmeat in 2011. Exports of sheepmeat totalled 98,000 tonnes (product weight), well ahead of the 88,000 tonnes imported. Tight global supplies, particularly from New Zealand, limited UK imports, whilst at the same time inducing an increase in demand for UK exports. An increase in availability of UK sheepmeat due to greater production also enabled UK exports to expand.
Australian sheepmeat exports to the UK declined in 2011, back 13% from 13,151 tonnes swt to 11,426 tonnes swt. Australian sheepmeat exports to the UK are limited under the 19,186 tonne cwe European Union sheepmeat tariff rate quota.
