Wholesale market mixed

22 June 2012

The quality of lamb carcases entering Sydney’s wholesale markets has been very mixed in recent weeks, causing prices to ease by as much as 20¢/kg cwt. The broken trade tended to be 10¢ cheaper, with cuts from heavier lambs facing reductions of up to 20¢/kg.

The beef carcase trade sold to stronger interest, with clearance rates improving. The broken trade, aided by early clearances on entire carcases, was slightly dearer on recent weeks. In the carton trade, total sales increased, with MSA grades meeting the strongest demand.

Incoming pork supplies continue to exceed demand; with retail demand reportedly weak and current prices being largely supported by sound manufacturing demand. While prices have remained firm in recent weeks, it is anticipated these will ease soon to encourage clearance.
