India

Recent activity in the Indian beef market shows that:

  • Indian carabeef (meat derived from water buffalo) exports over the first ten months of 2009 decreased 17.5% compared with the same period in 2008, to 339,167 tonnes.
  • Most of the fall in shipments was in India's traditional markets such as Malaysia, Philippines and the Middle East. In contrast, shipments to Vietnam rose, where higher volumes of Indian carabeef was distributed in wet markets, in the institutional sector and used in the production of processed beef.
  • Prices of Indian carabeef exports averaged only US$2.23/kg FOB during January to October 2009, a slight fall compared with an average US$2.29/kg FOB in 2008.
  • India still prohibits imports of beef and beef products due to religious sensitivities.
