Goatmeat
Australian shipments of goatmeat to the Middle East rose from only 1 tonne swt in 2008 to a total of 1,025 tonnes swt in 2009 as a cheap protein substitute for mutton and other more expensive meats.
Trade to the region was almost entirely constituted of six-way cut frozen carcases, substituting mutton in the industrial catering industry and lower socio-economic populations. The main rises of goatmeat exports to this region were to the UAE, where exports reached 431 tonnes swt, Qatar (374 tonnes swt) and Saudi Arabia (148 tonnes swt).
Export statistics
The latest export statistics reveal that Australia exported 56 tonnes of goatmeat to the Middle East/North Africa in the calendar year to February 2010, 100% higher year-on-year.
