Goatmeat
The US is Australia's largest goatmeat export market, with shipments in 2010 reaching 14,437 tonnes swt, valued at A$66m FOB. Australian goatmeat is commonly exported to the US via six-way cut carcases and goat meat cubes.
In light of rising mutton prices, many US consumers (particularly the Hispanic and ethnic population) are increasingly consuming goat as an alternative red meat protein.
US goat inventory
The US has a relatively small goat population. As at 1 January 2011 there were 3 million goats in the US.
