Russia

Russia is the second largest beef importing nation in the world behind the US and ahead of the EU. It has a growing economy, with a population of around 142 million people.

The consumption of red meat in Russia has grown rapidly as a result of the increasing purchasing power of the local population - with local meat consumption growth continuing to outpace production.

Rapid growth in domestic food prices is a major concern among consumers and policy makers, prompting the local government to established import quotas for the main meats consumed - poultry, pork and beef.

Russia experienced a slump in trade during late 2008 and throughout most of 2009 as a result of the financial and economic crises. However, exports from Australia to Russia strongly recovered in 2010, reaching 56,646 tonnes swt of beef, as local consumers return to increasing their meat consumption given their traditional processed meat culture and growing preference for western-style cooking.
