Russia
Russia is the largest beef importing nation in the world, ahead of the US. It has a growing economy, largely driven by the growth in oil and gas production, and has a population of 143 million.
The consumption of red meat in Russia has grown rapidly as a result of the increasing purchasing power of the local population as incomes rise in line with economic growth in the region. Red meat continues to be largely consumed in form of processed meats, however there is a growing market for high quality red meat in Western style steak houses.
Russia has recently been admitted to the WTO. While Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) volumes for frozen beef, pork and pork trimming already match WTO commitments, the fresh/chilled beef quota will need to increase 10,000 MT for 'other countries' and frozen boneless chicken meat will need to increase 24,000 MT for the EU and for 'other countries".
