Beef

Russia is the largest beef importing market in the world, ahead of the US. Australian product in this market has historically faced strong competition from South American suppliers. Strong domestic consumption and an increase in alternate markets for South American suppliers has reduced the volume of their product being sold into the Russian marekt, opening up increased opportunities for Australian beef.

Despite a sharp reduction in Australian exports to Russia in 2009 after a boom in 2008, Australia's beef exports have recovered, with exports 56,646 tonnes swt in 2010 and 54,088 tonnes swt in 2011.

Australian exports to Russia

Latest statistics show that shipments of Australian beef to Russia totalled 54,088 tonnes in 2011, back 5% on 2010. The vast majority of product (98%) is frozen beef, with manufacturing beef the dominant cut, comprising 38% of all exports.

Beef import quotas

Throughout the last decade, the government has aimed to increase domestic meat production. This has been largely successful for poultry and pork, however; rising costs, low farm gate prices and a processing sector and supply chains that have achieved low profitability has meant that beef production remains stifled. Import quotas aim to reduce imports and support local production.
