Beef
Beef exports to the South East Asia and Greater China region were stronger in 2009 (up 36% on 2008), and consisted mainly of frozen product due to increasing demand for Australian beef in the foodservice, manufacturing and retail sectors. This was driven by increases in exports to eight of the nine markets in the region.
Red Meat Market Report
- Australian beef exports to the Greater China region (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) increased in 2009, with shipments lifting to Taiwan, and setting new records to both China and Hong Kong.
- Given the very difficult export conditions during 2009, particularly as the A$ appreciated during the second half of the year and as major economies slowed, Australian exporters shifted product to smaller and more robust markets. The strength of the economies in the Greater China region, and solid demand because of the good health of household balance sheets, resulted in both Hong Kong and China benefiting from product displaced from the struggling US, Japan, Korea and Russian markets.
- Retail beef prices in China were historically high over the past year and are expected to remain strong this year, given the continued fall in domestic beef supplies.
- Australia continues to face competition from low priced suppliers such as Brazil, and from New Zealand, the US and Canada.
- Competition in the Greater China region, combined with lower supplies from Australia this year are expected to reduce Australian beef exports in 2010 on 2009's strong performance.
