Co-products
Cattle co-products contribute significantly to livestock returns. Offal items, hides, pharmaceutical extracts and rendered products such as tallow, meat and bonemeal, and bloodmeal can account for as much as 25% of the saleyard value of some cattle.
Total beef and veal offal exported in 2011 was 130,765 tonnes swt, 2% more than 2010 (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry).
Exports continue to be dominated by the key markets of Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Russia.
Co-products monitor
Each month approximately 25 abattoirs across Australia participate in MLA's co-products survey. The survey incorporates most co-product items, collating average prices and producing value models for four cattle categories. The information is used to update the potential co-product values for livestock.
