Sheepmeat & lamb
MLA Market Information's Industry Overview publication provides a snapshot of the key market drivers affecting the sheep industry. Some of the key highlights from the latest edition include:
- Lamb and sheep prices were relatively steady during March, compared with February, although remained well below year-ago prices. Eastern states slaughter remained well above last year, despite smaller yardings, indicating stronger processor activity for lambs direct-to-works.
- WA saleyard prices remained above those in the east, with yardings well below last year's levels.
- March lamb exports were 20% higher than the previous year, at 15,899 tonnes swt, bringing the first quarter total to 41,190 tonnes swt, a record for that period.
