Co-products
Sheep co-products contribute significantly to livestock returns, despite much lower collection rates than their cattle counterparts.
In 2011, 20,526 tonnes swt of sheep offal was exported - an increase of 8% on 2010.
There are not as many markets for sheepmeat and goat offal as for beef and the range of edible items collected for export is much smaller - with hearts, kidneys, liver, runners and tripe the most widely collected. Preference for sheepmeat and sheep offal from some countries - particularly within the Middle East and its suitability as a cheaper protein alternative ensures demand for product remains strong.
