Japan is a critically important market for the Australian beef industry, taking range of products from manufacturing to chilled grainfed beef. It is also one of valuable markets for Australian lamb and mutton exports.
Australian red meat exports to Japan
In 2015, Australian beef exports to Japan totalled 285,224 tonnes swt, down 3% from the previous year, and the second highest volume after the US.
Japan also took 7,977 tonnes swt of lamb (down 21% YOY) and 3,733 tonnes swt of mutton (down 27%) during 2015.
Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) entered into force on 15 January 2015. As a result of the seven year-long challenging negotiations, the JAEPA will eventually deliver tariff reductions on frozen Australian beef entering Japan, from 38.5% to 19.5% over an 18 year period, and for chilled beef from 38.5% to 23.5% over 15 years.
There is no import tariff imposed on sheepmeat to Japan.
