The breeding program for your herd affects the future direction and profitability of your business. The Breeding EDGE is designed to assist producers to develop a breeding program or improve the existing one. It uses reproductive and genetic knowledge and technologies to achieve desired production targets. The Breeding EDGE package has been customised for producers in northern Australia.

The workshop consists of six modules:

  • Examining your current situation
  • Reproduction issues
  • Genetics
  • Setting breeding objectives
  • Livestock selection
  • Managing the herd to capture benefits

What you will get from this workshop:

The workshop package consists of the three-day workshop, a follow-up day (approximately six months after the workshop) and on-going consultation with the deliverers, as needed. The workshop uses an interactive style, building on the participant’s knowledge. Materials provided include technical manual, workbook and references. The workshop deliverers are drawn from a team with substantial practical experience in animal breeding. Each deliverer is experienced with on-farm issues and has had close involvement with the research covered in the workshop.

During the workshop you will:

  • Work through the steps involved in developing a successful breeding program
  • Gain a thorough understanding of reproduction and genetic principles
  • Develop skills that can be applied on farm
  • Evaluate the reproductive and genetic options that best suit your situation
  • Develop strategies to optimise genetic gains and achieve desired change
  • Begin developing a breeding plan for your business

Individual issues will also be addressed during this course.

Cost and commitment:

The Breeding EDGE is a three day workshop – 8:30 am to 5:00 pm each day, with a paddock session in the afternoon of day 2.

Normally $1650 (or $1850 for two) plus GST, this workshop is being offered for only $500 plus GST for 2 people from the same business (for eligible participants), thanks to funding from Reef Plan.  This includes all morning and afternoon teas and lunches for the duration of the workshop, and workshop materials.
