How good is goatmeat?
Many claims are made about the nutritional attributes and benefits of goatmeat, including the belief that, beyond tasting great, goatmeat is low in fat and cholesterol and high in iron and zinc. Until now these claims have been unsubstantiated in Australian conditions and therefore could not be used in public marketing campaigns.
This situation is set to change however following MLA's recent commissioning of research to determine key nutritional properties of goatmeat. The results of this work will then be available to underpin future goatmeat marketing activities.
The attributes to be assessed in the research include:
- Iron (Fe)
- Zinc (Zn)
- Fatty acid profile
- Intramuscular fat (IMF%)
- Cholesterol
Goatmeat derived from fully domesticated and managed rangeland goats will be used in the analysis which is expected to be completed later in 2009.
