Save the date: Weeds on the menu 30 May

Although those in the know are well aware of the added advantage goat production has in the area of weed control, producers of other forms of livestock have not yet heard the story.

That’s set to change in Victoria with a major Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) information day titled “Goats: The weed busters” to be held in Wangaratta on 30 May. The main aim of the day will be to increase awareness and provide information on goats as a form of chemical free weed control.

Organised by the VFF and supported by MLA, the seminar will target property owners and primary industry officers in order to provide existing and prospective goat producers with more information on using goats to control weeds in their environment. The day will also serve to build stronger ties with primary industry officers who can ultimately disseminate this information to a broader audience.

The format for the day will be practical with producer case studies to demonstrate how goats are utilised in various environments. This will enable producers to compare operations and management systems and maximise the potential of goats as weed controllers on their properties.

Other topics covered will include goat nutrition and fencing as well as an overview of the export and domestic markets for goats and goat meat.
