NVD Bar-coding
Bar codes have been introduce on to the eDEC NVDs, Emergency NVDs and printed NVDs. The reason that the bar codes have been added is to improve speed and accuracy in transferring information from the NVDs to computer systems such as at Sales Yards, Feedlots and Abattoirs. The bar codes that are on the NVDs are an ISO/ IEC 15417:2000 Standard referred to as CODE128 symbology. The ISO CODE128 symbology is the highest reliability bar code format for printing on forms that is readily available.
The size is to be at least 13mm tall and magnification is 100%.
An example of a bar code is NA123456001234.
This NVD bar code is made up of:
- NA123456: this is the PIC for the property
- 001234: this is the serial number for the NVD
The reasons to use ISO CODE128 are:
- It is a Bar Code format with an in built check digit which means the bar code either scans with the correct result or does not scan. Other bar code format can give incorrect data which scanned.
- The size of the bar code is very small for the amount of data that is stored.
- All current model bar code scanners support CODE 128 bar codes.
- The format is the chosen format for bar code for all global trade items, pallet, etc. eg it is the most commonly used format in the world.
