Addressing the Attraction and Retention Issue

The red meat industry in Australia is experiencing difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled effective workers. Many in the industry are spending a considerable amount of time and resources advertising, recruiting and training, however there is a significantly high turnover.

Although the Australian red meat industry has enormous potential to expand both nationally and internationally there are a many aspects that create concern. This is predominantly due to the changing environmental conditions which have been of growing concern and threaten the competitive advantage of the industry. A long term, sustainable, industry wide approach is necessary to enable this dynamic industry to grow productively.

MLA have taken a strategic approach to addressing these issues by undertaking a high level of industry and external consultation to develop a long term strategy that aims to ensure sustainable, practical solutions. At a minimum it is important that every business understands the real impact of this issue and this cannot be done without objective measures of turnover rates, costs of turnover and the main issues impacting on retention. MLA is currently involved in a range of initiatives to provide practical solutions for the industry.

Attraction and Retention Strategy
In an effort to affect the attraction and retention issues effectively, MLA in consultation with industry have developed a strategy which aims to assist industry to undertake initiatives to formulate long, term sustainable changes.

Cost of Turnover
When considering the cost of turnover it is important to consider the resources that go into attracting, recruiting and training the person to a level at which they are competent in the industry as well as considering the effect on the business and employees when that person leaves.

MLA Initiatives
MLA is currently working in partnership with industry groups, state government bodies and individual sites to bring practical solutions to the industry.
