Bioactives
A bioactive is an active component of beef, sheep and goat material that has an impact on other biological systems, generally providing either a therapeutic or health benefit.
These components are increasingly used as key ingredients in foods, pet food, leather, nutraceutical, cosmetics and biopharmaceuticals manufacturing. Bioactives from Australian sources have enjoyed a renewed interest due to our industry’s clean and green status.
The High value Bioactives program (PDF, 1298KB) is designed to enhance the industry’s productivity and sustainability through the development of products from value-adding processing. The program has a number of research and development (R&D) strategies including:
- Identification of market opportunities for bioactives
- Facilitation of supply chain development, market access and regulatory approval processes
- Facilitation of application of novel technologies to the production of bioactives
- Development of novel technologies for the development of bioactives from red meat.
Bioactives bulletin Read the Bioactives bulletin, which aims at communicating to the industry relevant business development activities and opportunities for red meat bioactives. It also provides an overview of key outcomes from the high-value Bioactives program
MLA has been running a series of workshops for the red meat industry and associated value adders, addressing the issues in developing Bioactives opportunities. The focus to date has been on the market opportunities, strategies for project selection and tools for estimating cost of production. The latest Biaoctive workshop took place on 8 and 9 October 2009 and presented the recently re-developed Bioactives Compendium – a collation of more than 125 files on red meat bioactives, including prices, yields and market information. The compendium will enable industry to undertake preliminary economic feasibility analysis to identify which bioactives fit with their business and to identify potential technologies and market partners.
