  • Climate Change Newsletter August 2008 (PDF, 478KB) Find out about the effect of climate change on the red meat industry and the Federal Government's proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS)
  • A Greenhouse Emissions Strategy for the Australian Red meat Industry (PDF, 226KB)  While it is imperative that the agricultural industries remain profitable, viable and internationally competitive, there is also an expectation on land managers to contribute where they can to minimise their environmental footprint.
  • Red meat in the Australian environment (PDF, 688KB) As a leading global supplier of red meat, the Australian red meat industry must consider the impact of climate change and respond with environmentally sustainable production practices that consider all aspects of natural resource management.

Communicating climate change project fact sheets

The following information sheets (available for download as below) were produced as part of the Communicating climate change project funded by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in collaboration with MLA, Land and Water Australia, Bureau of Rural Sciences, Bureau of Meteorology and Birchip Cropping Group

These fact sheets aim to assist farmers and the advisors who support them to be better equipped with knowledge and strategies for managing the impacts of climate change on livestock and grain production.

Useful websites on Climate Change

  • Australian Climate Forum provides regularly updated news from around the world on climate and climate change to inform, educate and stimulate debate about the issues of climate change and its implications.
  • The Australian Farm Institute has been established to conduct research into public policy issues impacting on the Australian farm sector, and to promote policy solutions that maximise the economic and social wellbeing of farmers.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology – Climate data online section provides overview climate maps of Australia, including Climate Zones, Evapotranspiration, Sunshine Hours, Relative Humidity and Thunder Days.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology - Water and the land page presents an integrated suite of climate information for primary industries and natural resource management (including rainfall forecasts, infrared satellite images, temperature, wind, pressure, humidity, evaporation, sunshine and El Nino and La Nina information).
  • CarbonSMART is seen as an innovative project to provide an option to corporates to address their environmental responsibilities.
  • Climate Change in Australia provides essential tools for government, industry and the community to understand the likely magnitude of climate change in Australia and the possible impacts.  The Climate change in Australia report is available for download from the Resources page of this website.
  • The Climate Institute is a non-partisan, independent research organisation that works with community, business and government to drive innovative and effective climate change solutions.
  • CSIRO Division of Atmospheric Research provides scientific advice and solutions on issues involving the atmospheric environment and the climatic systems. Information on the site covers topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, Ozone Depletion, El Nino and La Nina, urban and regional air pollution.
  • Department of Climate Change The Australian Government is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors, including agriculture, and recognises the need to address this issue in partnership with the agriculture industry.
  • eCarbon News is a free monthly emailed digest of news from around the world relevant to climate change. It includes sections on Kyoto, emissions and policy; economics and business; energy; sequestration; climate and climate change; and trading and tax. It is emailed to subscribers at the end of each month.
  • The Garnaut Climate Change Review has been commissioned by Australia's Commonwealth, state and territory governments to examine the impacts, challenges and opportunities of climate change for Australia. A Draft Report was released on 4 July 2008, and the Final Report is due by 30 September 2008. A Supplementary Draft Report will also be released in late August 2008.
  • The Managing Climate Variability program invests in research, development and extension to help Australian farmers to manage climate risk. The program invests in research to improve the skill of seasonal climate forecasting and develops tools and applications to assist farmers to incorporate climate information into farm business decisions. The program is funded by a collaboration of partners from commodity research and development corporations and the Australian Government. The website provides fact sheets related to climate prediction and impacts as well as downloadable newsletters.
  • The National Agricultural Monitoring System (NAMS) contains a range of climatic and production information, for dryland/broadacre and irrigated industries for over 600 regions throughout Australia.
  • The National Climate Change Research Strategy for Primary Industries (CCRSPI).  On this site you will find information about CCRSPI, it’s strategy, climate change resources, news and upcoming events.
  • Queensland Department of Primary Industries - Climate page  including links to climate and crop outlook information, understanding forecasts, severe weather warnings and decision support tools.
  • SARDI Climate Applications Unit links to websites, crop production risk information to assist farmers' in decision-making, and Climate Outlook and Climate Support information including publications and services available.
  • UK Meteorology Office: Climate change myths - The UK Meteorology Office’s web page on dispelling climate change myths.
  • Victorian Resources Online is a gateway to a wide range of natural resources information and associated maps. Information can be accessed at both Statewide and Regional levels across Victoria.
  • Victorian State Government’s Climate Change Program provides information about the suite of actions led by the Victorian Government to address climate change. Includes background information about climate change, emissions trading, adaptation and current actions across a range of sectors.

    - The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 25 European States, based in the United Kingdom. The site provides medium range weather forecasts, ocean analysis, seasonal forecasts, data services and links to the sites of the member countries.
  • Long Paddock 3-month outlook using SOI and links to AussieGRASS for pasture growth outlooks.
  • International Research Institute for Climate and Society
    International Research Institute providing precipitation and temperature seasonal forecasts for Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Pacific Islands and South America. The site also has a large number of technical reports, information on the state of ENSO, summary of recent climate events and impacts and has a strong focus on capacity building and education.
  • UK Meteorology Office – Hadley Centre - Leading international research centre undertaking studies on global climate, focusing on climate change scenarios and impacts.
