Researchers are mapping the future for livestock producers through what is now the defining issue of our time. Climate change will affect producers, not just through changes to rainfall and temperature but through government policy such as the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) where emitters of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide pay to offset their production. An CPRS is expected to begin in Australia in 2010, but agriculture is not scheduled to be part of it until 2015 at the earliest.

MLA has recently undertaken a significant strategic shift in its market development activities in the South East Asia and Greater China region. Australian red meat producers, lot feeders and packers are always ready to maximise returns and continually have an eye and an ear out for what the next ‘emerging market’ will be. We export over 60% of our red meat production to around 120 countries, and in recent years just three of these markets have taken 90% of our total beef exports — Japan, USA and Korea.

Optimising genetic potential can double your present genetic gain. This is the realistic aim for many sheep and cattle breeders with the use of Total Genetic Resource Management (TGRM). It is a computer program aimed at finding the ideal genetic match for every individual animal, based on a stud’s overall breeding goals. Using TGRM is like using a flight simulator for your breeding program, as it allows a stud to nominate goals for a series of traits; growth, muscling or calving weight for example, and then fly through gene space to the target you set.
