About
The aim of the Human Nutrition Research Program is to provide credible and sound nutrition evidence to help us understand:
- Red meat’s role in a healthy diet.
- Red meat’s contribution to improving public health in Australia.
- Emerging areas of nutrition and behavioural science.
Projects
Since 2000, the Human Nutrition Research Program has funded over 33 projects looking at the role of red meat or higher protein diets in:
- Delivering key nutrients – iron, zinc, vitamin B12, omega-3s – in the diet
- Weight management
- Diabetes
- Blood pressure
- Skin health
- Cancer
- Healthy ageing
- Food patterns
- Nutrient composition

Selected MLA nutrition research projects
- Red meat and blood pressure
A study funded by Meat & Livestock Australia and conducted by the Univeristy of Western Australia found a diet with increased lean red meat, lowers blood pressure in subjects with elevated BP (superior to higher carb diet)
- Optimising Micronutrient status in toddlers
A study funded by Meat & Livestock Australia and conducted by the University of Otago found that increased intakes of red meat can help to prevent iron deficiency in toddlers.
