South East Asia and the Chinas
The South-East Asia and Chinas region is important to Australian red meat exporters. In 2009, 14.1% of total Australian beef exports and 19.6% of total lamb exports were shipped to this region.
Of the total Australian mutton exports, 12.8% headed to the Greater China region and 10.8% were destined for South-East Asia.
Australia's exports in the South-East Asia and Greater China region vary from country to country. Beef exports to the region were stronger in 2009 (up 35% on 2008), mainly frozen, due to increasing demand for Australian beef in the foodservice, manufacturing and retail sectors. This was driven by increases in exports to eight of the nine markets in the region.
Lamb exports increased during 2009, and shipments of mutton to the region also experienced a lift.
MLA is continually trying to grow exports to the region by conducting promotional activities and working with and supporting exporters and importers of Australian red meat. MLA recognises the importance of building and maintaining relationships and has country representatives throughout the region.
