Top 25 rankings

MLA first published the value adders ranking in 2001 in order to show shareholders the myriad markets and uses for red meat both domestically and overseas. Processors ranking has been published since 1991and is based on the volume production of beef and sheepmeat (carcase weight tonnage) by the major processors for the previous calendar year.

Top 25 value adders for 2006

The top 25 value adding companies ranking is based on the quantity of raw red meat used in value adding operations in 2006. The ranking provides an insight into the largest bulk buyers of red meat products and the varied range of products they produce as well as future consumer trends impacting on the red meat industry.

 

At a glance

  • The 25 biggest value adders used over 200,000 tonnes of raw red meat.
  • Primo Smallgoods tops the list with their smallgoods and specialty meats range.
  • Burger patties and meat pies are clear leaders, claiming around 35% of total production.

Top 25 processors for 2007

The annual top 25 red meat processors ranking is based on throughput of beef and sheepmeat processed in 2007. The ranking provides an insight into the operations of the major processors as well as industry trends in terms of livestock availability, market share and plant control over the past year.

 

At a glance 

  • JBS Swift Australia maintains number one position in the 2007 ranking with a national kill share of 15.77%.
  • Second placed Teys Bros. production levels increased by 26% on 2006 figures.
  • Top five red meat processors account for approximately 45% of production with the combined top 25 accounting for approximately 79% of national production.
  • The top 25 processors represent 51 plant sites.

Top 25 producers for 2003
The top 25 beef producer list is based on the estimated tonnes carcase weight of beef turned-off by industry participants in 2003.  The ranking not only provides a list of the biggest players in the industry but also an insight into the production practices of these leading producers.

 

At a glance

  • The combined area operated by the Top 25 is almost 58 million hectares.
  • The combined herd size of the group clocks up to over 2.4 million head.
  • Almost all of the top 10 producers finished cattle in feedlots to ensure consistent quality of product to a market that rates food quality and safety highly.
  • Domestic markets accounted for 37% of beef sold while 48% was for export markets (refer to beef markets table for further information).

Top 25 lotfeeders for 2003
The latest ranking is based on 2003 production. Like the beef industry as a whole, lotfeeders went through a turbulent few years with one of the most severe droughts on record; discoveries of BSE in Japan as well as one of Japan’s major supplier’s the US; and all while the Australian dollar saw a massive appreciation by up to 30%.  This resulted in significant cattle and grain price fluctuations.

 

At a glance

  • The 25 top lotfeeders included in this report made a significant contribution to the Australian lot feeding industry in 2003 accounting for 56% of the total accredited lotfeeder turn-off.
  • Australia Meat Holdings (AMH) retained its tag of being Australia’s largest feedlot operator with a maximum capacity of 99,000 head and annual production of over 63,000 tonnes across its four feedlots: Prime City; Beef City; Mungindi; and Caroona.
  • Despite a fairly tumultuous year, the top 20 feedlots managed to increase aggregate production by 3.5% from 2001 levels and 50% from 1999 levels.
