Brazilian SISBOV to be privatised
19/07/2007
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) is studying the possibility of privatising their cattle traceability system, the Brazilian Identification and Certification System of Bovine and Bubaline Origin (SISBOV). The system was implemented by the Brazilian government in January 2001, with the purpose of identifying animals from different foot and mouth disease (FMD) status regions.
Two cattle associations, the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders and the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock Farming are bidding for the system’s administration.
The system operates through various independent agencies, which collect the data and provide it to the SISBOV database. It requires 22 different pieces of information for each animal, beginning at the packer and moving back to the property of origin. Since the beginning of this year, all export producers must participate in this program.
