High A$ lifts grassfed beef prices in Japan

18/07/2008

Swayed by further appreciation of the A$ this week, prices of Australian chilled grassfed beef lifted in the Japanese wholesale market. Chilled grass navel end brisket increased the most, rising 100 yen/kg, or 15% from last week, to 770 yen/kg.

Chilled grainfed prices generally maintained similar prices to last week, except topside (shortfed and middlefed), which lifted 6% and 5%, to 820yen/kg and 825 yen/kg, respectively.

Export trading with Japan was modest to steady this week, with some items, such as briskets and trimmings, receiving more inquiry than others. Increases in frozen beef prices have slowed, and the availability of some products has reportedly improved.
