Research & development

MLA invests in R&D relevant to the sheep, cattle and goat sectors of the industry, both on and off farm, to boost the productivity and sustainability of the entire red meat supply chain.

On-farm research and development
On-farm R&D projects include grazing management, animal health and welfare, feedlot management, meat quality, animal genetics for improved efficiency and environmental management.

MLA has developed a strategic plan for R&D into livestock production for the next five years. It provides the framework for how and where producer levies and Commonwealth government funds will be invested in livestock production R&D. Off-farm research and development
Off-farm R&D activity includes environmental management, eco-efficiency, product development, health and safety, education and training, technology development and commercialisation, food safety and microbiological research, and co-product innovations such as new blood fractions and rendering process technologies.

Determining research priorities
MLA R&D is aligned with the Federal Government’s national and rural research priorities. Where appropriate, MLA collaborates with government, the industry - including the Southern Australia Beef Research Council (SABRC) and the North Australia Beef Research Council (NABRC) -and other research organisations (including rural R&D corporations) to avoid research duplication and ensure joint approaches to common problems
