Postgraduate Studentships

The awards aim to facilitate research and training in areas of practical value to the Australian beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat industries. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.  A number of different awards are available:

  • MLA Studentships - postgraduate Diploma or Masters courses, maximum duration two years.
  • MLA Junior Research Fellowships - postgraduate degree at PhD or equivalent level, maximum duration three years.
  • MLA Study Awards - sabbatical type training for established professionals, maximum duration one year.

Conditions for postgraduate scholarships in Australia - 2008 (PDF,1.7MB)

Priority areas for scientist training are set to meet future requirements of the red meat industries and may include on-farm productivity, sustainability, rangeland management and technology transfer. Specific fields include, but are not limited to:

  • Sustainability of production systems including greenhouse gas mitigation;
  • Animal disease epidemiology;  
  • Information sciences as they relate to animal production; 
  • Genetics or genomics of animals, pasture plants or microoorganisms;
  • Social science or other aspects of technology adoption and innovation.

A call for applications in priority areas will be advertised in October for submission by 1st November.

Off-farm scholarships are sponsored by The National Meat Industry Training Advisory Council (MINTRAC) to support research at Honours and postgraduate levels. Priority topics include:

  • Meat safety
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Nutrition
  • Engineering
  • Environment
  • Co-products
