ABARE's latest lamb slaughter report
Strong international demand and constrained supplies of Australian lamb because of adverse seasonal conditions have resulted in domestic lamb prices remaining at historically high levels in 2007-08 (figure a). While lower wool production and some increase in demand have resulted in wool prices gradually recovering in recent years, they remain relatively low in real terms.

Australian broadacre sheep producers have responded to the relative prices of lambs and wool by reducing the national sheep flock and dedicating a greater number of sheep to producing slaughter lambs.

Consequently, the number of lambs slaughtered in 2007-08 was 24 per cent more than a decade earlier, despite sheep numbers falling by 31 per cent and a reduction in lambing rates because of drought in parts of Australia. Find out more...

Australia’s lamb producers are being urged to participate in Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) June 2009 online lamb survey, designed to gather statistics on the current state of the nation’s lamb flock.

The June 2009 MLA lamb survey is open for producers to complete, with the survey aiming to identify lamb production trends, and form the basis for key lamb supply forecasting activities by MLA.

MLA Japan's Aussie beef promotion - 'Boost immunity & re-energise with Aussie beef!'
MLA is running a web-based promotion for Aussie beef in response to consumer concerns over swine flu and the current financial climate.
 
The promotion aims to increase the awareness of the health benefits of Aussie beef, including high zinc levels, which is recognised as an important nutrient in boosting the immune system.

It has received considerable attention from the Japanese media and the general public, which has lead to a large number of competition entries and  registrations for the Aussie beef and lamb newsletters. Read more...

 

 

 


Seoul team to encourage consumers to dive into casserole cooking
Olympic gold medallist Duncan Armstrong will feature in MLA's latest beef television commercial due to air nationally from 31 May.

Armed with the latest ENTICE magazine containing beef casserole tips and recipes, Armstrong is encouraged to create a medal winning beef casserole under the guidance of Laurie Lawrence, the man who coached him to gold in the 200 metre freestyle at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

According to David Thomason, MLA, General Manager Marketing, casserole cuts are a very popular meal in winter, with 5.24 million serves purchased in an average week, casserole cuts are one of the major cuts of beef purchased in Australian households – behind only steak, mince and sausages.
