Aussie Beef Japan holds strong for Aussie beef during economic turmoil

Japan is proving to be a safe haven for Australian beef exports, with the volume of red meat being sent to that market holding firm amid the current global financial turmoil.

 

Beef exports to Australia’s biggest beef export market remain at similar levels to those of a year ago, before the financial crisis hit. Year to date exports of Australian beef to Japan have totalled 305,774 tonnes, down just three percent compared to 314,493 tonnes exported in the same period last year.

 

MLA's Managing Director David Palmer, who is currently in Japan, said that Australian beef exports to Japan have held up remarkably well in recent months. Find out more...

MLA members pass all AGM resolutions
A record number of MLA members have voted to pass all resolutions put forward at the MLA annual general meeting (AGM) in Orange this morning in a strong show of support for the company.

MLA members voted to re-elect the current MLA Board Chairman Don Heatley and current Board Director Peter Boyden, while first-time nominee Grant Burbidge was also appointed to the Board. MLA members also voted in support of the resolution to increase the aggregate amount for MLA Board Director fees, excluding the Managing Director. Minimise disturbance to diminish serrated tussock
The key to keeping serrated tussock in check is to minimise any disturbance of productive perennial pastures and encourage competition to outdo the destructive weed. This is one of the fundamental messages from Charles Sturt University Research Fellow, Dr Aaron Simmons who is looking at integrated management strategies for the control of serrated tussock on behalf of MLA. 2020 foresight with new sheep genetic selection tools
Australia’s lamb producers now have access to a new breeding index and specialist website that can help them improve the genetic progress of their flock with desirable traits such as parasite resistance, increased muscle and optimal birth weight. The new LAMBPLAN Lamb 2020 index is highly suited to producers supplying 20-24 kg carcase weight lambs, especially Merinos but also cross-breds. Lamb producers interested in the Lamb 2020 index are encouraged to develop their understanding of LAMBPLAN and consult their ram breeders to determine the best sire selection for their individual operation. Also launched today was the revamped Sheep Genetics website – www.sheepgenetics.org.au – which can assist sheep producers continue to improve their genetic progress. Find out more... 


Call for public submissions to beef levy funding review
The committee formed to review the beef marketing funding levy is inviting submissions from cattle levy payers and other industry stakeholders. The Beef Marketing Funding Committee is currently looking into the funding requirements for Meat & Livestock Australia’s domestic and international marketing programs and in mid-2009 will propose a per head transaction levy rate to meet these requirements. This proposal will then be put to a vote of levy payers to determine industry support. The call for public submissions has been made to ensure the committee undertakes a comprehensive analysis which considers the needs of all cattle levy payers.
