Making More From Sheep


The Making More From Sheep program is a partnership between MLA and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) and provides Australian lamb and wool producers with a best practice package of information and management tools to assist them build profitable and sustainable sheep production enterprises.

Central to the program is the Making More From Sheep: A sheep producer's manual. The 11-module information package captures the experiences of nearly 250 sheep producers and technical specialists and identifies the major principles and procedures that optimise various areas of a sheep production business.

A range of events, workshops, seminars, webinars and forums build on the information contained in each module of the manual and provide a learning pathway for producers to apply the practices and principles of the program directly to their sheep enterprises.

Supporting the program is a dedicated website and a quarterly email update. These resources provide online access to the manual as well as tools, case studies and resources associated with the program.

The manual

The manual has 11 modules that address different aspects of the production system in a sheep and wool enterprise.

  • Module 1 - Plan for Success
    Helps producers set clear business objectives and the strategic direction of the sheep and wool enterprise. Read Module 1 online

    Provides a background to wool enterprise planning and is designed to assist with on-farm decision making, regardless of the production and marketing processes are used. Read Module 2 online
  • Module 3 - Market Focused Lamb and Sheepmeat Production
    Assists sheep producers to deliver quality-assured lamb and sheepmeat to target market specifications. Read Module 3 online
  • Module 4 - Capable and Confident Producers
    Offers practical ways to boost capacity, capability and confidence through effective communication, long-term planning and, ultimately, business performance. Read Module 4 online
  • Module 5 - Protect Your Farm's Natural Assets
    Details procedures to help producers build the capital value and profitability of the sheep enterprise and keep their natural assets functioning effectively now and into the future. Read Module 5 online

    Outlines practices to determine the health of soils, how to improve soil health to maximise pasture growth and how to maintain healthy soil biology. Read Module 6 online

    Outlines ways to achieve the best alignment between animal demand and pasture supply so as much pasture as possible ends up as animal product without jeopardising the feedbase or natural resources. Read Module 8 online

  • Module 10 - Wean More Lambs
