Evaluation

The MLA Program Evaluation Framework, developed by the Centre for International Economics, enables an objective assessment of program outcomes against the company's strategic imperatives. The framework also reports on alignment of MLA's programs with the Australian Government's Rural Research and Development Priorities.

Importance of evaluation

An independent program evaluation framework plays a vital role in strengthening the capability of the red meat industry to generate strategic plans and also provides a context for reporting on the efficiency, effectiveness and impact of MLA's key investments. A work schedule of planned, rigorous, and transparent program evaluation increases industry confidence in MLA's capacity to deliver outcomes and appropriately invest industry and government funds.

Evaluation is part of normal business for MLA and the results of the evaluations conducted provide a basis for the MLA Board and management to continue enhancing the performance of the company. It also empowers MLA staff to further sharpen the focus on achieving real outcomes that align with the objectives of the Strategic Plan 2016-2020.

Impact Assessment: 2010-2015

The most recent company-wide program evaluation was undertaken in 2016 for the period 2010-2015. For the first time, the assessment used a new revised and comprehensive process that assesses the impact of MLA’s entire portfolio of programs over the period. The Impact Assessment concluded that MLA’s $997 million expenditure on research, development and marketing programs from 2010-11 to 2014-15 provides current and future industry returns of $6,170 million. This equates to a benefit cost ratio of 6.2:1, or $6.20 return for every dollar invested.
