Are you the next Nuffield?
29 May 2015
From meeting innovative producers around the world to drilling down into a research topic that will make a real, on-the-ground difference, Nuffield scholarships offer many opportunities.
The scholarships give Australian primary producers and managers the chance to travel the world, firstly as a group on the renowned ‘Global Focus Program’, and then individually to investigate the best agricultural practices in the world.
Nuffield is taking applications for the 2016 scholarship program until 30 June 2015. A $30,000 bursary is provided to successful applicants to carry out their study over a two-year period.
There will be more than 20 scholarships offered by Nuffield Australia, sponsored by a range of Australia’s leading primary sector organisations. MLA sponsors one scholarship each year.
In 2014 the MLA scholarship was awarded to Michael Craig from Harrow in Victoria. He is investigating the Australian sheepmeat industry’s ability to create value in changing environmental, economic and social conditions.
Michael is General Manager of Tuloona Pastoral, a mixed broadacre livestock and cropping enterprise consisting of 18,000 sheep, 500 cows and a 1,400ha cropping program. Michael said with high production costs, a tough environment and small population, Australian sheep producers have a challenge to be profitable while creating consumer value.
“If the forecasts around climate change and global development trends are right, then Australian sheepmeat products will increasingly become a semi-luxury protein source, requiring new ways of thinking about our supply chains," he said.
"I’m looking at whether additional value creation can be distributed equitably through the supply chain to improve returns and vertical linkages, particularly in the context of Australia’s climate variability, production scale and ability to adapt."
