Thursday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at Hamilton lifted 9% week-on-week, to 11,964 head, with an improvement in overall quality. There was a better selection of heavier, well-finished lines on offer, and a reduced number of lighter weights. Buyers were more selective.

  • New season light weight 2 score lambs were firm on 529¢/kg cwt
  • New season trade weight 3 score lambs eased 9¢ on 532¢/kg cwt
  • Old season light weight 2 score lambs were 36¢ dearer on 552¢/kg cwt
  • Old season trade weight 3 score lambs were down 4¢ on 553¢/kg cwt
  • Old season heavy weight 3 score lambs lowered 3¢ on 562¢/kg cwt

At CTLX, lamb consignments dropped 25%, to 6,250 head, and it was a very good quality yarding. There were some good runs of trade and heavy lambs penned, while plainer quality lambs were in shorter supply.

Sheep numbers were back 46%, to 3,300 head, with crossbred ewes making up the majority of the offering. Most grades sold to a dearer trend.

  • New season trade weight 3 score lambs increased 42¢ on 575¢/kg cwt
  • New season heavy weight 3 score lambs were 47¢ higher on 586¢/kg cwt
  • Old season light weight 2 score lambs to restockers averaged 592¢/kg cwt
  • Old season trade weight 3 score lambs lifted 13¢ on 560¢/kg cwt
  • Old season heavy weight 4 score lambs eased 3¢ on 559¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score crossbred ewes averaged 245¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 534¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs averaged 458¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs averaged 500¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs averaged 535¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs averaged 545¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator averaged 277¢/kg cwt
