Tuesday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Toowoomba Elders was steady, with 792 head of predominantly young cattle offered. Buyer attendance was good and prices mostly trended dearer. Light (200-280kg) C2 yearling steers to feeder buyers improved 12¢, averaging 273¢, while the heifer portion gained 4¢, averaging 241¢/kg. Cows also sold to a dearer trend and heavy D4 lines improved 12¢, averaging 237¢ and selling to a top of 249¢/kg.
TRLX Tamworth yarded 1,289 head, back 19% week-on-week, and quality was mixed, with good runs of well-bred cattle suitable for restockers and feeder buyers, as well as some pens of finished cattle off crops. Medium C2 feeder steers improved 2¢, averaging 308¢ and selling to 324¢, while heavy C3 heifers to the trade eased 4¢, averaging 277¢/kg. Heavy C4 grown steers jumped 54¢ on the back of improved quality and additional competition, averaging 330¢, while medium D3 cows to restockers, some PTIC, sold to strong demand, averaging 221¢/kg.
Consignments at Wagga dropped 36%, to 3,470 head, and quality remained similar. Prices for young cattle mostly improved, particularly for finished lines to slaughter. Average EYCI eligible cattle improved 38.12¢, to 575.97¢/kg cwt – one of the dearest markets throughout the eastern states. Medium C2 feeder steers eased 1¢, averaging 313¢, while the heifer portion was steady, at 294¢/kg. Heavy C3 yearling steers to the trade improved 5¢, averaging 322¢, while the female portion gained 12¢, averaging 308¢/kg. Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter declined 10¢ partially due to quality, averaging 299¢, while heavy D4 cows improved 8¢, averaging 246¢/kg.
At the close of Monday’s markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 538.25¢, up 3.25¢/kg cwt on where it finished last week and the highest value on record. Trade steers eased 2¢, to 305¢, while feeder steers were steady, at 302¢/kg lwt. Medium steers improved 4¢, to 284¢, while heavy steers jumped 8¢, to close at 298¢/kg lwt. Medium cows averaged 217¢, up 2¢/kg lwt.
