Summary

SAFEMEAT, in consultation with partner organisations, updated its Gene Technology Policy in March 2005.
In doing this, there was a recognition that the industry needed to develop a policy on the broader aspect of biotechnology, which would not only encompass gene technology, but would look more closely at other emerging, and potentially more controversial technologies, such as cloning.
This project developed a biotechnology position paper for SAFEMEAT. The paper was compiled following industry discussions and a one-day industry forum bringing together industry leaders.
The paper discusses global biotechnology developments, Australian research and development, consumer perception and industry and government positions.
