Summary

Reviews of genetic parameters for sheep production traits show significant variation and potential for genetic improvement of most production traits. These reviews however show a lack of information on the inheritance of carcase traits in Merino sheep. There are several reports of estimates of genetic parameters for carcase and meat quality traits in Merino rams, but these are based on limited data sets and they did not in particular account for maternal effects which can inflate heritability estimates.
