MLA established an Animal Welfare Benchmarking Steering Committee to advise the Research Organisation for MLA project B.FLT.4007 – Feedlot Animal Welfare Benchmarking being undertaken by the University of Melbourne. The steering committee consists of two independent animal welfare experts, a lot-feeder, a grain-fed beef retailer, a MLA representative and an ALFA representative.

This CMA was established to cover the costs associated with establishment and participation by members of the steering committee including sitting fees and travel and accommodation costs.

Objectives

To advise the Research Organisation for MLA Project B.FLT.4007 to ensure:

  1. The majority view of industry consultation meetings are considered by the Research Organisation during animal welfare benchmarking framework development.
  2. An animal welfare benchmarking framework is developed that encompasses animal welfare requirements, addresses key consumer concerns and is science and evidence based.
  3. Answer questions on issues relating to Feedlot Animal Welfare as the Research Organisation consider appropriate.

Key findings

The steering committee has successful been advising the Research Organisation on MLA project B.FLT.4007 – Feedlot Animal Welfare Benchmarking.

The Feedlot Animal Welfare Benchmarking Project is ongoing, and the steering committee will continue for 2020/21 under project B.FLT.4010 – CMA: FY21 Feedlot Animal Welfare Benchmarking Steering Committee.
