A survey of beef cattle diseases in Victoria
Before embarking on investigations of diseases in Beef cattle in Victoria it seemed logical to carry out a survey to try and establish what losses are due to disease and the comparative importance of these diseases. Funds for this project were obtained from the Australian Cattle and Beef Research committee to cover a twelve-month period initially which was extended to eighteen month. Three months were spent in preparatory work, 9 nine months in the field, and six months abstracting information and framing this report .
Because the beef industry in Victoria is concentrated in several clearly demarcated areas (Map 1 taken from Victoria Year Book 64) with different environmental features as regards climate and topography which are likely to influence management practices and the nature of disease 9 it seemed necessary to deal with each area specifically to obtain comparisons, and attempt to seek relationships between the occurrence of disease the cause disease and the limitation imposed by disease on management.
The results of the survey are thus set out in three major sections
A) Management procedures
B) Disease Incidence.
C) Management and Disease Interaction.
