Animal Welfare Outcomes of Livestock Road Transport Practices
The project delivered scientifically defensible quantification of the animal welfare outcomes of Australian livestock transport practices that will enable the industry to:
- defend against welfare-associated market access barriers;
- provide assurance to the general public and to markets and consumers; and
- address problems in livestock road transport practices that are revealed.
The project was conducted in 2 stages. Firstly, the Research Organisation conducted controlled studies to quantify the welfare outcomes of key transport practices and conditions using a range of scientifically validated objective measures of animal stress and welfare. Secondly, this was matched by research conducted under purely commercial conditions using a smaller subset of targeted measures to validate welfare outcomes. In order to provide a common link across all the research a standard set of journey times were used.
