NMPA Collaborative Innovation Strategies Partnership program
Nippon Meat Packers Australia Pty Limited (Nippon) commenced the collaborative innovation program in December 2009. Nippon is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Meat Packers Inc, a public company listed on the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges. In Australia, Nippon has 6 operational units, including 3 processing sites (Oakey Abattoir, Thomas Borthwicks & Sons, Wingham Beef Exports), feedlot and farming operations (Oakey Holdings), and a tannery (New Wave Leathers).
The Nippon innovation strategy focuses on business improvement across the length of the Nippon value chain. It is a part of a broader Business Improvement program being undertaken across the entire Nippon Ham group. In addition, the Nippon business improvement program will work to improve collaboration and capability across the group. Another key feature of the business improvement program is the ongoing measurement of the impact that the projects undertaken on Nippon's bottom line. A key feature of the systems and processes used by Nippon to implement their business improvement program is their idea and project management systems.
As a result of the successes achieved by the program for Nippon in cost reductions and positive sales impacts during stage 1 of the program, they are advancing to stage 2 of the program.

- Returns of $6,611,120 from Collaborative Innovation projects undertaken so far
- Reduction in production costs by $4.89 per head across Nippon group
- Increase in sales value by $0.94 per head across Nippon group
- Positive impact on sales of 17%
- Return on investment on cost reduction initiatives of 84%
