For the fourth time, some of Australia’s tastiest beef – and the producers who grow it – have been recognised in the 2023 Meat Standards Australia (MSA) Excellence in Eating Quality Awards, by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA). The awards recognise beef producers in each state who have achieved outstanding results in a very large field of tough competition and receiving one is a prestigious achievement.

The lot feeding market has entered a period of decline, with grainfed OTH prices now only 2¢ higher than the grassfed indicator.

Australian beef exports in February were back 14% year-on-year, reflecting the continued decline in cattle slaughter over the past six months. However, the fall was driven by grassfed product, with grainfed exports in February actually lifting 13% year-on-year, to 23,376 tonnes swt.

MSA undertakes a wide range of Research and Development (R&D) with the aim of making all cattle and sheepmeat eligible for MSA grading. In 2022–23, research continued on projects investigating the impact of rail transport on beef eating quality, alternative pathways for cattle and sheep through saleyards and the impact of various refeeding protocols, and whether biomarkers in high pH meat can be detected in saliva prior to slaughter.

For the first time ever, grainfed cattle made up more than half of all beef production and domestic consumption in Australia in Q1 2021.

Cattle on feed at the end of the June quarter rose to a record 1.12m head, an increase of nearly 10% from March. This is underpinned by July grainfed exports also recording a record month.

2023 marked the 25th Anniversary of MSA, the world’s leading eating quality grading system. The 2022–23 Annual Outcomes Report (AOR) highlights the progress of the MSA program including the record $259 million estimated farmgate returns to MSA beef producers in 2022–23.

In 2022, the lot feeding sector solidified itself as a major component of the Australian beef supply chain, accounting for a record 47% of total cattle slaughter.
